Born Marshall Mathers III, Eminem came up the hard way in a tough ghetto neighborhood in Detroit. His career took off when he was signed by Dr. Dre. When the doctor took flack from many fellow rappers for working with him, he threw some shade at them, saying, "I don't give a fuck if you're purple; if you can kick it, I'm working with you." As a teen, Eminem had idolized Dr.Dre from the time he heard him as part of N.W.A. They formed a bond that was based on talent and mutual respect. In 1999, he released The Slim Shady LP, which was certified quadruple platinum and never looked back. in 2000, his Marshall Mathers LP sold 1,760,000 copies in its first week, overtaking Snoop Dogg's Doggystyle as fastest-selling hip-hop album and even Britney Spears' Baby One More Time as the fastest-selling solo album in music history. At one point, he had four consecutive number-one albums. In 2010, B.E.T. named Eminem "the number one rapper of the 21st century." By 2011, The Eminem Show and The Marshall Mathers LP both were certified diamond. He is the only rapper with two diamond-certified albums. Not bad for a white kid from the ghetto.
