After finding fame in 1970 as a member of the English punk rock band Generation X, Billy Idol went on to forge a successful career as a singer, songwriter, and actor. After growing up and being described as “idle” by his schoolteachers, William Broad took on the stage name of Billy Idol and rose to fame with Generation X. After the band broke up, Billy Idol uprooted and moved overseas to New York City to start his solo career. His first two albums, Billy Idol in 1982 and Rebel Yell in 1983, were wildly successful, both in commercial terms and in their effect on society. Rebel Yell alone was certified double platinum, selling over two million albums in the USA alone. Not only were these albums commercially successful, but some of the singles, namely “Dancing with Myself” and “White Wedding” became staples of the then-newly formed MTV. After walking away from the spotlight for the entirety of the 1990s, Billy Idol now releases music periodically but continues to play shows throughout the year.
