Glenn Danzig and the band that bears his last name is in the direct heavy metal lineage of Black Sabbath. They also had roots in punk and a southern California version of satanic metal, despite having roots in New Jersey. Formed in 1988 and initially being managed by Rick Rubin, they established their commercial groove early on and their refusal to be just another metal band kept them open to changing their sound in ways that influenced their peers. They fused poetic lyrics with a sensibility that was part blues guitar hero, goth, heavy metal, and doom-laden. It ensured they would be around for nearly three decades with plenty of room to evolve when they needed to.
