George Clinton, alongside artists like Sly Stone and James Brown, is regarded as one of the innovators and creators of funk music. Clinton’s style, which was reflected in his Parliament-Funkadelic collective, drew from different inspirations such as science-fiction and psychedelic culture while incorporating Clinton’s outlandish fashion choices and surreal humor. His solo career, having been launched in 1981, went on to become a considerable influence on the 1990s hip hop and G-funk scene. Clinton was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1997 and will receive the 2019 Grammy Lifetime Achievement Award.
