Minor Threat was a short-lived hard core punk band founded in 1980. They disbanded in 1983 but left a lasting influence. Best known for having written and performed the song "Straight Edge" that kicked off the Straight Edge movement, whose adherents avoid alcohol, tobacco, recreational drugs, and promiscuous sex--not for religious reasons but as a reaction to punk rock's prevailing subculture. Straight Edge followers championed vegetarianism, animal rights, and leftist political causes. They released several EPs and compilations, but only one studio album, 1983's Out of Step.
