David Bowie's career spanned five decades. Of course, there were many David Bowie's. He reinvented himself so many times that his fans never tired of his chameleon-like personality. Bowie's music hall shtick, modeled after Brit musical theater star, Anthony Newley surfaced sporadically but he also drew from hard rock, heavy metal, soul, folk, and pop. He was a singer-songwriter, a glam rocker, The Thin White Duke, an actor, and finally bowed out with Blackstar, bidding farewell to all of his personas with a genre-shattering final statement. He challenged conventional gender expectations and eventually revealed himself as a "closet heterosexual." Part performance artist, part rock star, an accomplished actor, he sold 140 million records over his career, had 11 Platinum-certified albums, and entered the Rock Hall of Fame 1n 1996.
