American rock band Tom Petty & The Heartbreakers formed in Gainesville, Florida in 1976. The original band comprised of Tom Petty (lead singer, guitar), Mike Campbell (lead guitarist), Ron Blair (bass guitar), Stan Lynch (drums), and Benmont Tench (keyboards). The band's music was characterized as both heartland rock and Southern rock. The band was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2002 their first year of eligibility.
