Digital Underground was a hip-hop group formed in Oakland, California in the late 80s. Led by Greg “Shock G” Jacobs, the lineup for Digital Underground was different for each of their studio releases. The band had originally aimed to be a more aggressive, socially-conscious act, but decided on a more whimsical direction after Public Enemy cornered the social justice market in hip hop. Digital Underground sampled a ton of music, mostly funk music from the 70s, a practice that would go on to define the West Coast rap scene. Digital Underground is mostly known for two things: their 1990 smash hit single, “The Humpty Dance,” and is the launching pad for the successful solo career of a former member, Tupac Shakur. The group toured nearly every year from their inception up until their disbanding in 2008.
