Formed in 1990, Converge blurred the lines between heavy metal and hardcore punk rock, ultimately resulting in the pioneering of a new genre. Hailed as one of the most innovative and creative bands to come out of the punk/metal scene, Converge has released nine studio albums, three live albums, and countless EPs. The band rose to popularity with their fourth album, Jane Doe, in 2001. This album was listed as the 61st best heavy metal album of all time by Rolling Stone and is cited as one of the most significant records in the genre of metalcore. While Converge is considered one of the earliest metalcore bands, they were also responsible for the creation of the subgenre known as ‘mathcore’ which is characterized by hardcore punk rock speed with complex, dissonant riffs and abrupt changes in tempo.
