One of the earliest bands to lay the groundwork for what would later be known as “pop-punk,” the Buzzcocks were one of the biggest bands in the Manchester music scene. Taking their name from a phrase out of a Time Out magazine review, but also finding the sexual connotation funny, the band was short-lived. After breaking up in 1981, the Buzzcocks continued to reform on occasion, most recently releasing a new album in 2014 before the death of singer/guitar player Pete Shelley in 2018. The Buzzcocks style of infusing classic 70s punk rock with pop hooks and romantic lyrics would pave the way for bands like Descendents, Green Day, or blink-182. Although their run was short, the Buzzcocks are one of the most underrated punk rock bands of all time.
