Beethoven's father was professional musician employed at the court of Bonn. He was a heavy drinker with big ambitions for his son. At a very young age, he was drawn to music and his father taught him for hours, often when he returned from his regular music lessons or a visit to the local tavern. He was a gifted composer early on and his father thought he had a new Mozart on his hands, a prodigy. In 1782, before he was yet 12, he was prominently mentioned in the pages of the Magazine of Music. Although today we find this work classical, and close to the works of Mozart and Haydn, at the time certain listeners found the symphony strange, overly extravagant, and even risqué’. A true genius, Beethoven, still a young composer went to Vienna and became even more celebrated. He has never established boundaries of music. In our time, it's likely that he would have rock and roll classics. Roll over Beethoven and tell Tchaikovsky the news.
