The beginning of the Pixies dates back to when Charles Thompson IV met guitarist Joey Santiago at Amherst University. By 1986, Thompson took out an ad for a female bass player and formed a band. Kim Deal, who had never played bass, answered the ad and was asked to join. She became a role model for women who wanted to rock hard. Later, she led a women's trio, the Breeders. The alternative rock band sounds that the Pixies helped invent influenced Nirvana and the grunge bands that surfaced in the 90s. David Bowie said the Pixies made "just about the most compelling music of the entire 80s.
